Insecticide Resistance Comes of Age

چکیده

A. W. A. BROWN It is now 21 years since DDT -resistant house flies were first discovered in northern Sweden, and since the report of Wilson and Gahan that a DDT -resistant strain could be produced by laboratory selection at Orlando. Although the resistance of the San Jose scale to lime-sulfur was detected by Melander in Washington state nearly 60 years ago, the resistance problem as we know it came on the scene with the organic residual insecticides in 1946. Now that this year it has come of age, we might well examine how the economic entomologist has fared with this cuckoo in the nest; is it a clear case of defeat, or is it peaceful coexistence. At least we know the nature of the enemy. It is produced by selection, not habituation. You can expose flies to non-killing doses of DDT for 150 generations, as Liiers has done with DrosoPhila, and you don't get resistance. But as soon as the dose begins to kill a segment of the population, as Gaines Eddy and coworkers have shown with body lice, the resistance to DDT devel0JlS. As the susceptible individuals are selected out the more I"t'sislant genotypcs are left to producc the suc~eediug generations. The insecticide cannot produce postadaplalions; it can only favour the proportion of the preadaptations for resistance already just barely present in the !)opulation.

Modelling the impact of declining insecticide resistance with mosquito age on malaria transmission

Background. The evolution of insecticide resistance can lead to an increase in the entomological indicators of malaria transmission, such as mosquito survival and blood feeding rates, thus threatening efforts to control malaria. Yet, there is little evidence from the field that malaria control programmes are failing due to insecticide resistance. One explanation for this apparent contradiction ...

Mosquito Control Aerosols’ Efficacy Based on Pyrethroids Constituents

Mosquitoes are found all over the world except in the Antarctica. Mosquitoes are two winged insects that belong to the insect order Dipteran. Members of the genera Aedes, Culex and Anopheles are well known and responsible for bites in humans. Only Female mosquitoes bite. This is because they require blood to assist in vitellogenesis. Feeding behaviour of mosquitoes is either classified as zooph...

Insecticide resistance in the bed bug comes with a cost

Adaptation to new environmental stress is often associated with an alteration of one or more life history parameters. Insecticide resistant populations of insects often have reduced fitness relative to susceptible populations in insecticide free environments. Our previous work showed that three populations of bed bugs, Cimex lectularius L., evolved significantly increased levels of resistance t...

Monitoring Pyrethroid Insecticide Resistance in Major Malaria Vector Anopheles culicifacies: Comparison of Molecular Tools and Conventional Susceptibility Test

<Anopheles culicifacies is a main malaria vector in southeastern part of Iran, bordring Afghanistan and Pakistan. So far, resistance to DDT, dieldrin, malathion and partial tolerance to pyrethroids has been reported in An. stephensi, but nothing confirmed on resistance status of An. culicifacies in Iran. Methods: In current study, along with WHO routine susceptibility test with DDT (4%), di...

The Effects of Age, Exposure History and Malaria Infection on the Susceptibility of Anopheles Mosquitoes to Low Concentrations of Pyrethroid

Chemical insecticides are critical components of malaria control programs. Their ability to eliminate huge numbers of mosquitoes allows them to swiftly interrupt disease transmission, but that lethality also imposes immense selection for insecticide resistance. Targeting control at the small portion of the mosquito population actually responsible for transmitting malaria parasites to humans wou...
